The past few days were drying days, as far as the corn was concerned. The field that was just a little too green to chop on Friday was begging to be chopped today.
Here is a short video of the first load going into the empty silo...
All afternoon as I was peeling peaches, I listened to the drone of the chopper out in the field, and the tractor and blower at the silo, as load after load was emptied into the last silo. It's a good feeling to have that last silo full. Around the end of September, we will top off all three silos with our late corn, and that will be the end of silage for this year.
Tomorrow, Jim will level the silage, and we'll spend a chunk of time setting up the unloaders, so he doesn't have to climb up and fork silage down into the cart each time he feeds.
Fall is definitely here!
thanks for the video - i could almost smell it - and it's been years since i was around silage...
ReplyDeleteThanks for another peek into your dairy farming life. In Idaho when I was a kid, we had trench silos, not uprights. but I always loved this time of year and corn harvest.
ReplyDeleteThat was a great video. It has been years since we did corn silage. I remember the juices that seeped from the old silos and the cows loved that stuff but let say... .I don't miss the smell. Our silos are all too deteriorated to use them now and we only do hay silage in those white big marshmallow wraps.
ReplyDeleteHave a great corn harvest and I hope that you have great weather.
Hugs,
JB
Oh thank you Alica I have never seen that before. Yeah almost ready for the winter:) I must say I kind of hope it is going to be a little less rushing and a lot more resting:)Bring on the snow I cannot believe I said that. Too late to delete so I look forward to snowshoeing:) Hugs B
ReplyDeleteThanks for the video. Can you send me some of your cooler weather?
ReplyDeleteThat must be a big motor to get it all the way up there, so what did people do in the old days? How did they get it up there?
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of that as I was watching.
Thank you for this video. Silage is something we don't do! Interesting for me!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up on Eby trailers, I don't get notifications on comments for old posts so I never would have seen that.
ReplyDeleteA good feeling indeed to have such a nice stash of feed for your beautiful Holsteins. The peaches will be a nice thing to have stored away as well.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful feeling to have those silos all filled and ready for winter! So, what are you going to do with all those peaches? :)
ReplyDeleteI know you guys have such a good feeling in your hearts tonight!
ReplyDeleteHarvest is my favorite time of the year. I just brought home a lug of peaches, what are you making? I think I will make a pie, maybe some peach brandy, and can the rest so I can savor them this winter.
ReplyDeleteWe had a few beautiful days, but we're back to being horribly hot again. So glad you got the silos filled. What a great feeling to know you have plenty for this winter.
