Graduation Weekend...

It was a milestone weekend for several members of our family.  Two of my nephews graduated from high school...one of them locally, and one of them in Virginia.

The kids and I traveled with my sister and her kids to Virginia on Friday evening, and spent the weekend celebrating with my nephew Curtis and his family...

The cousins enjoyed spending time together, although free time was a bit limited.  Our stay was filled with activities...grad party...Baccalaureate...Church...and the Graduation ceremony on Sunday afternoon.  There's never enough time, but they enjoyed the time they had together.  In two years it will be Eric's turn...

On Saturday morning we had a little time to visit my Aunt Elaine's candy shop at the Dayton Farmer's Market.  This is my Dad's youngest sister...she makes delicious chocolate candy!

And too soon, it was time to head for home.  I tried to snap a few pictures of the Virginia countryside as we traveled north.  It's hard to take good pictures out of the car window, but here are a few.

We saw fields and fields of round bales.  On the way down on Friday evening, we saw a bale start to roll down a steep hill.  It rolled end over end and when it reached the bottom, it bounced of the high tensil fence and came to a stop. That must have been one strong fence!

One of many old barns we passed...

Lots of cattle grazing...

And lots of rolling hills...

It was a quick weekend away, and we enjoyed a little break from our regular routines.  Jim stayed home to milk, and had some help from the neighbor kids.  Two of them took turns helping him with the cows, and two others fed the goats, calves and chickens.  They had a new heifer calf to care for, which can sometimes be a little difficult, but they did a great job, and she's doing well!

Maybe we can train them to do all the work for us, and we'll all get away together next time!

Hmmmm...

  2. Oh Alica yes you need to train the neighbour boys to do your chores so you and your poor husband can both go away and enjoy these family celebrations. Oh I love the round bales I cannot wait till we start here. Glad you at least got away next time both of you OK. Hug B

  3. I think that is so nice that you could get away. I do hope you train them so you can leave. I love the pictures of the countryside and how pretty it is and what a nice time to spend with family. Are your kids out of school for the summer too?

  4. Okay, strange question...but were you in the Walmart near Dayton on Saturday at around 11:00 AM?? I noticed someone who looked like you, and it didn't occur to me until later that it could have been you since Curtis was graduating this weekend! I actually thought it was Peg at first!

    1. Oh, that's funny! Yes...we were there! Of course I went to Virginia without a graduation card...and we were on our way to the Dayton Market. I actually thought about if maybe I would see you somewhere this weekend! :)

  5. I'm glad you could get away for a bit. Always a challenge on a dairy farm, isn't it?

    Love your pictures of Virginia.

  6. It's so nice that you could get away for the weekend even though it was a busy one, it was a break from the routine. I love the photos of your trip.

You are lucky that your neighbour's kids pitched in and help caring for the calves. I agree that new calves can be a bit demanding. The calves all have diffefent requirments depending on their age.

My husband said that he saw an airal video of some round bales of hay being tossed arond in the high winds a few yeasr ago on TV and there was hay all over the place.

It won't be long before we start haying here too. I don't know how it will be this year with all the rain we've been having.
    Hugs.

  11. Congrats to your TALL nephew! It must be nice to have someone close to help when ya'll want to get away for a day or so. Love that scenery and glad to hear the runaway hay bale didn't cause any damage. :)
