Good Fences #2

There's something about split rail fences that makes them one of my favorites...especially when they're old and weathered.

This one runs around two sides of our rental property...

This fence has been around for probably about 45 years, and its definitely old, weathered, and in need of repair.  Over time, the rails have fallen down...been put back up again...fallen down again...and some of them have been replaced.  We've had trouble finding new rails long enough to fit between the old posts, so Jim had these extension pieces made.  Up close, it changes the look of the fence, but at a distance you can't tell, and it's working for now...

In another week, this section of fence will be especially pretty, with clumps of blooming daffodils underneath...

...and later this summer, the grape vine (that desperately needs pruning) will provide grapes for some juice and a couple of batches of jelly!

What's your favorite kind of fence?

  3. I love the way they are carved holes in the uprights for the fence to go trough and also the way they join them together.

  4. Oh gosh, I completely forgot it was the fence day! I think this one looks well-cared for. I also really liked the calf post. It's nice to learn all the details of farm life. It's a life I like to imagine for myself, but probably I wouldn't have the energy for it. So I'm glad to read about your farm!

  5. Perfect with the daffodils next to the fence. I could use a fence like that here.

  9. I love the fence. They are a lot of work, but sure prettier than steel and wire. I can't wait to see it with the daffodils and grapevines.

  10. I've always liked split rail fences or even any wooden fence. Repair, repair, repair that's what fencing is all about. I like the beauty of old wood. MB

  15. I love a split rail too. Put one in my yard as background for one of my flower beds. That one will look lovely when the daffodils start to bloom. Thought you would link your last post to Good Fences. The calves are sweet.

  18. I have always loved split rail fences the best. That one is very pretty because of it's age I think. How nice that it will have grape vines and I love the flowers that are coming up under it.

  22. They are lovely, but they would not be very good at keeping goats in. ;-)
