When Things Don"t Go As Planned...

I've been looking forward to this week all summer long...a week of visiting with my sister's family, enjoying the last week of summer before sending the kids back to school, one of them for the last time!

All that changed on Thursday evening.  All I did was bend over to snap a cow's chain to her collar, when something "flew into" my back.  If I didn't know what that meant before, I sure do now!  By Friday morning I was unable to sit or walk at all, and on Friday evening was diagnosed with a herniated disk in my lower back, and another one bulging, pressing on a nerve that I'd rather not even know I had!

It's a helpless and humbling experience, to be laying on a mattress in the middle of the living room floor while someone else does the dishes, cooks the meals, does the laundry, gathers and washes the eggs, sweeps the floor, and basically does everything for me.

I am SO VERY THANKFUL for my family, who have been really good sports so far.  Jim has had to rely on others to help in the barn...Jenna has taken over the laundry...Eric's been getting up extra early to help before cross country practice...my sister who lives nearby spent Friday with me, cleaning, and even picked, shelled and froze my lima beans...my visiting sister's family (on their vacation) has taken over the daily tasks that we take for granted!  My Mom mopped my kitchen floor and went for groceries...my Father in law mowed the yard...my Mother in law brought us a whole lot of yummy food... (Olive Garden!!) and the list goes on.

I am SO VERY THANKFUL for all the people who have cared for us by providing meals!  My refrigerator is FULL and overflowing.

I am SO VERY THANKFUL for pain meds!

I have no idea how long this will go on, but after only five days, I'm going crazy!  I really want to just get up and go!  The earliest I could get an appointment with a specialist is next week.

I'm going to take a break from blogging until I'm on my feet again, or at least until I'm able to sit for longer periods of time.

What do you do when things don't go as planned?

  4. Alica, I completely know how you feel. I have had back pain for over 10 years now, and when I get flare ups, all my plans fall by the wayside. It is a terribly humbling and helpless feeling to not be able to function. Thank goodness you have so much support. The things that I continue to learn are accepting help when offered and allowing yourself to rest when you need it. Praying that you will get relief soon.

  7. Alica, I can understand your pain. It's a very humbling experience like you said. I remember not being able to get out of bed by myself and needed help to get dress and go to the bathroom. I still have some issues with my back but I try to baby it now.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. Enjoy the love that is given to you through this help from your family.
    Hugs & prayers,

I am so sorry for the back problems you are having, and will pray you are able to get to the Dr. and fixed up soon!!!

Yes, thank heavens for family , so kind and loving. It's wonderful that they are there for you when you need them. Don't fret about not being able to do things for yourself, or being able to take on your old routine. If they needed your help, and were in a similar situation, you would be more than happy to help them out, as well.
Their service to you, brings them blessings :)

    Take care of you!!!

  10. Back pain is no fun at all. I hope your recovery is speedy!
On a side note, it is obvious how hard you work and how much you do around your farm when it takes that many people to fill in for you! You should take a much needed break when all is well again!

  11. Oh dear, please take care of yourself. You have the ultimate back pain - how horrible. I have a chronic condition, but at least I can still walk and sit for a short period of time. You are very fortunate to have fmily around you that can help pitch in and keep things going. Time doesn't stop on a farm. Hope all goes well for you.

  17. I'm so glad you have a good team of helpers to cover for you while you're down and out. It takes a lot of people to do what you do by yourself when you're running at top speed. So sorry you're hurting and hope by now you have some relief.

  18. Oh my dear Alica I am sending you healing hugs (gentle ones) and prayers. It is OK to let others take care of you when you need it because they want to do it and that is what love is all about. I do wish I lived closer because you would get so tired of seeing me:)
Take care and do what you are told ...... do not rush back take the time to let your amazing family and friends help you to get back to where you need to be that is truly what they need to do and I am sure we all wish your pain was gone. Take care and I will be thinking of you. Rest rest rest........xoxo Hugs B
