Spring Fence Repairs...

It's that time of year again...

The grass is turning that wonderful, bright shade of green...the temps are warming up (at least they're supposed to be...we'd like to forget about the mid twenties we had last night, and the dusting of snow on tax day!)...and the cows are itching to get out of the barnyard and onto the lush meadow!

Today Jim and I scoped out the fence at the other farm.  I walked around the west and south edges of the meadow, checking to see that there were no sections that needed repair...

The electric wire runs directly through the PVC fence, like this...

This was the only section that I found that needs repair...pretty amazing, after the winter we had!  A car went into this section of the fence, shattering the two bottom rails.  Surprisingly enough, the electric wire wasn't damaged!  We'll need to pick up two replacement rails.  They snap into place quite easily, so it should be a simple fix...

Even the electric wire around the pond was intact...

Meanwhile, Jim headed over to the east side of the meadow, where he knew he had some work to do. During the ice storm we had back in February, a huge branch from this willow tree snapped, landing on the fence.  Several rails were knocked down, but not broken...

Jim cut up the limb with his chain saw, and made several piles to be burned, probably next week before the cows go out onto the meadow.

You can barely see him here, on the left side of the picture, but he's snapping the last rail back into place...

There's one more section of wooden fence that will need some repair before we can put the heifers and dry cows out on the meadow, but it won't be long!

Hooray for spring...and good fences!

  1. Oh my that beautiful tree damaged. What a shame.
Your fence looks mighty pretty with the Spring Green!!!
I'm thinking the fence damage by the vehicle was caused by icy roads then?

    1. If I remember right, that's exactly what happened. A car slid off the road and into the fence. It's surprising it doesn't happen more often, as busy as that road is!

  2. Good that the fence can be repaired easily and that there was no damage to the electric fence.

  3. Lovely fence! I would do a happy dance if I had that around The Tiny Ten.. :) No need for electric wire, no critters for us to keep in. The cows are going to love that green!

  9. What a lovely farm you have. Looks like you are busy with the spring chores. It's good that the car going through the fence didn't do much damage.

  17. Don't you just love that kind of fencing. I love how clean it looks around your place and the electric fencing is wonderful. The people next door had some cows for awhile and the cows would just walk through the fence. I wish we had that then.
That is the good thing about when a rail breaks how easy it is to change it and it sure is nice that you never have to paint it. I love the white fencing against the green grass. It is just beautiful.

  18. I like how you've made a necessary fence into something so scenic as well. Your cows must give extra good milk when they live in such a nice place. Is the electrical wire "hot" to discourage the cows from getting too close?

    1. Yes...the electric wire is "hot" to keep the cows in line! They will push against that bottom rail to get to the greener grass outside the fence. Those rails push out relatively easily, and we don't want the cows (or the bull!) out in the fields or on the road, that's for sure!

  19. Oh Alica that is a very cool fence I must say I love how the electric runs through it. The icestorm and winter has been hard on our rail fences I am happy you did not have too much to fix. Hug B
