Random Five Friday...

It's been a while since I've joined up with Random Five Friday...but today's a great day to do it!  A lot has been happening to keep us busy around here.

1.  Lancaster County was hit by a nasty ice storm this week.  Wednesday morning was a mess!  It's amazing what 1/4" - 1/2" of ice will do to trees and power lines.  There are still many people without power, and it looks like it could be the end of the weekend until everyone is back in service.  We are very fortunate here, in that our lights never even blinked.  Jim was prepared to hook up the generator if we needed it, but we were glad to let it parked in the shed this time.

This is our rental property across the road.  Those old Chinese Elm trees are huge...and old...and they don't withstand stress very well.  Early in the morning, we heard "crack"..."crash"...over and over again. Thankfully no branches hit the house or any power lines.  Although it looks like a tornado hit, no major damage was done...

2.  A friend sent me this picture of our farm that she took on her phone.  The red of the Farmall M, and the orange of the manure spreader were the only traces of color!  This is what it's looked like around here for a while now...all white...

3.  I took this picture of the corner hutch the other day when I was feeding calves.  Pretty soon the snow will be melted (hopefully!!), the grass will be green, and Jenna will have two little 4-H goats in this pen again.  I might even put the chickens in here once it greens up, to give their pen a break...

4.  We got rid of this guy the other day.  He was little, but ornery, and there's no sense in keeping a bull that has an attitude...

5.  Jim and I attended the funeral for the mother of one of his closest friends recently, and I just had to share this picture.  The farmer and his wife don't always wear barn clothes!

Hopefully you're staying warm, wherever you are.  Have a great weekend!

  6. Sorry about the loss of his friend's mother. The farm shot is beautiful- I love the red against the snow. And you are so right- a bull with an attitude needs to move on down the road.

  7. Despite the mess that ice causes, it does make for some pretty photo's! Love the photo of your farm, and also looking forward to seeing some colors besides white again.

  8. Your picture is SO CUTE!

I love the picture of the farm, but the snow, not so much. Glad you got rid of the rambunctious bull... we are too close to farming life (generations past) to know that bulls are a danger, sometimes a necessary danger.

  10. Me again...just read your about me....My grandma's name is Ella Elizabeth : )

Also...I'm from Mennonite roots. I grew up in a Mennonite church (although non-traditional) in Illinois and went to Eastern Mennonite University. I bet we have some connections!

  11. Aren't you just the cutest couple! Terry and I don't keep ornery bulls either...there just isn't room for them on the farm.

  13. This is my first random 5 Friday and I enjoyed your post and photos too. I hope you don't get any more ice storms! We could use some moisture in this part of the world. I grew up on a farm and know what a danger an ornery bovine can be. Take care.

  14. Those darn Chinese elms. We have them everywhere! And such weak trees. Glad you didn't lose your power.

Love the photo of you two -- you clean up nicely. :)

  18. We get snow here but ice storms are very rare. It is so sad to see trees taken down and the damage ice can do to structures and how it can turn roads into skating rinks. Stay safe. Fun to see your smile.

  19. there's no sense in keeping any animal with an attitude; my life is too precious and bones too easily broken to allow meanness on the farm.

  20. The farmer and his wife look very good!

So far, we have escaped ice this year; snow but no ice.

We have Chinese Elms and are slowly getting rid of them. Brush to clean up after every storm.

Glad you got rid of the bull. I have been told Jerseys are the meanest critters.
