Here's what I saw...
This is a new peony for me. It came from a neighbor a few years ago, but for a variety of reasons, this is the first year it's bloomed. It was worth the wait...
The roses (also from a neighbor, who grew them from cuttings off his own bushes) are just loaded with blooms...
The red hot poker is doing it's thing...
Next I walked through the vegetable garden. I planted a new patch of strawberries this spring. Although you're supposed to pick the blossoms off the first year to allow the plant to grow strong, I cheated a little and left just a berry or two to ripen...
I'm trying tomatoes again this year. I can't figure it out, but for some reason I have trouble getting my tomatoes to fully ripen. I use a lot for canning, and figured I'd try again, rather than buying them. Any advice?
My green beans are up behind the tomatoes, and we planted a second batch of radishes in between the cages...
The early veggies...cabbage, lettuce, beets, onions and potatoes are loving the weather we've had this spring so far. I'm growing my cucumbers in cages so they climb and save space...
The dog follows me everywhere! I was also watched closely by this...
And by these two...Dilly and Pickles...
...and by this ornery looking newborn. I just wonder what she'll be like when she's older, hmmmm...
She (and others like her!) are the sole reason that I put plant supports around my (?!) squash...
I don't put them there because they'll do the plants any good, but because they might protect them just a little
I'm going to bet on the calf! Your garden is so far ahead of ours that I am extremely jealous! Every time I see pictures such as Dilly and Pickles, I think of getting some! However, She Who Must be Obeyed has told me "No more animals"! There must be a way...
ReplyDeleteIan...this summer when it's 95* and humid, I'll be jealous of your weather!!
DeleteWhat a beautiful garden and I love those tall cages. The animals are cute too of course. I love baby animals.
ReplyDeleteThe flowers are so beautiful and that rose grown from a cutting is so gorgeous.
Have a nice weekend. JB
Thanks Julia! I love those square cages...found them at an Amish store, and they are the strongest ones I've ever seen. What is especially nice is that they fold flat for storage!
DeleteI too wondered where you found the square cages...much better looking than those teepee type ones you buy at hardware stores...AND they fold flat?! Wonder if I can find those around here in VA? Your gardens all look so healthy and beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThat calf does look a little crazy. Good luck with her. The flowers are all so beautiful! I'm not sure what's going on with your tomatoes~so much is weather related (rotting, dry rot, etc.) I tend to pick mine before they are fully ripe and bring them in to finish ripening inside so I don't have as many of those problems. Of course, I think the goats are adorable! Love those names.
ReplyDeleteI think it might be a problem with watering, from what I'm hearing...maybe bringing them in to ripen will work for me this year!
DeleteYour yard and garden are beautiful, and that calf! We don't have cattle anymore, but I remember chasing errant cows which thought the neighbors' gardens were more enticing than their pasture!
ReplyDeleteLoved taking a stroll with you around your beautiful yard and garden! That calf does have a bit of a wild eye! LOL!!
ReplyDeleteI completely enjoyed my visit here today!
ReplyDeleteLovely flowers and gardens.
Love that catmint planted next to the red hot pokers, looks like 'Walker's Low'; my favorite variety.
We are still in 'Spring' mode here, and even got a heavy frost a few days ago, so it's lots of fun to see everything that is growing and thriving at your place!!
Have a wonderful day.
Smiles :)
Kerin
Oh your garden and your flowers are beautiful. It looks so nice. I can tell you have been really working. This is the first year my peonies bloomed too.
ReplyDeleteYou have such a beautiful place.
Your gardens look so well tended. Love that new peony. For some reason the one's I've tried don't do well even though my neighbors' do. Must be bad juju or something.
ReplyDeleteNo help with not-red tomatoes. Same problem here although I've tried those with shorter growing seasons like Early Girl with some success. The calves in the garden is not a problem everyone deals with but it looks like you've got plenty of experience.
You have everything neat as a pin. I love the pink roses with the white peonies in the background.
ReplyDeleteThanks! It's neat now, but just wait until this summer when it's hot and humid...the weeds will almost definitely win!
DeleteI adore the peony and the roses! Your garden is so delightfully weed free (the complete opposite of mine!) I was out battling weeds today, and am still no where near winning that war.
