Winter and My Canning Shelves...Where Did It All Go?

Oh my...I get sad when I go to the basement this winter and look at my canning shelves.

Most winters, they're still mostly full!  Jars and jars of tomatoes, salsa, pasta sauce, applesauce, green beans, grape juice, etc.

This is what happens when you lose a couple of months over gardening/canning season.  The shelves get empty really fast.  There are about six jars of applesauce...a dozen or so jars of green beans...a dozen jars of grape juice...a dozen pint jars of tomatoes, and a few jars of pasta sauce, thanks to my Mom who canned some for me in September...

We'll be eating plenty of pickles...

...and I have an abundance of empty jars ready to go for next summer!

No...we are not about to starve or come anywhere close!

We are blessed beyond what we need or want, and we have a freezer full of good home grown beef and some frozen veggies (thanks again to my Mom and my sister for picking, shelling and blanching my lima beans this summer!)

The store bought stuff just doesn't taste nearly as good, and it makes me sad to see the shelves so empty at the end of January.

  1. awww. i can imagine. :) reminds me of all the canning my mother did (with some of us kids helping if we could.)

  2. My shelves are empty too. I do have some pickles and I did the same thing, I wondered where it all went too.
I guess I need to be planning lots more canning this year. I like your shelves. In a way it is a nice feeling to know that we eat so much better because we do can food.

  3. Oh Alica spring is coming and pickles are good sandwiches:) I am thinking you are going to be so much stronger and ready for next year. No worries you are not going to starve because you have awesome family and friends. Hug B

  4. Fabulous looking shelves, even half empty. Or better as half full :)

  5. Wonderful shelves though even if a bit empty . I love home made pickles YUMMY ! It will be spring soon and then you will be busy planting it all again lol ! Thanks for sharing , Have a good week !

  6. Alica, your shelves are way more full than mine. When I was raising a family, my shelves were full and I would go look and admire my hard work. Now my shelves are mostly pickles, lol.

There's always next year to start a new canning season. You are with way more than a pantry full of preserve. I hope that your back is healing nicely.

    here I'm weathering the storm.
    Stay nice and warm.

  7. Oh, you are so blessed to have so much! Your preserves look beautiful!

  8. I so enjoy seeing empty jars turned into filled ones. There is something very fulfilling about a shelf filled with canned goods.

  9. You did much better than me! And the jars you have left look beautiful. Enjoy!

I enjoy hearing what you have to say! Thanks for your comments!
