Ahhh...Rye Grass...

Yesterday, we put the cows out in the rye grass to graze for a little while.

Here they come!

Food!  We stood near the wires that fenced off their grazing area, just to make sure they didn't run through.  When they see green, they go a little crazy...

(yes, I know it's a weed...but isn't it pretty?)

Here's Helen...she's one of the cows on the header photo at the top of the blog...about five years older, but still going strong!

I stood there and waited...and waited...trying to get a picture of a cow lifting her head with a mouthful of grass, to no avail.  They were too quick for me, so this will have to suffice!  :)

Once they settled down, their heads didn't come up for a while...

I love this sound.  If you turn up the volume the whole way, you can hear her munching...

Pure contentment!  A lush field of rye grass...and beautiful, cool spring day...and several hours of lounging in the meadow, chewing their cud and making milk.

What else could they possibly want?

Linking up to RURALITY blog hop.

  2. I love this post, Alica! Boy, does that take me back about 50 years. I love my Angus and few acres of pasture now, but there is nothing like a herd of good Holsteins on new grass. I see Patty there in the second picture. And the sound of grazing is wonderful.
    Thanks!

  11. Oh, I love the lush green! I can see why those cows are so happy. And I know how quickly they can whip their heads up when they're ripping out that grass- they don't want to wait for anything! Love the sound~

  13. Alicia, I just stumbled across your blog while hunting for a pic to illustrate a fact sheet for kids on spring pasture management. Love the pic above of Helen (and friend) and am seeking permission to use it. Who am I? Robyn, Careers Coordinator at WestVic Dairy, a not-for-profit regional development program for the industry in southwest Victoria, Australia. The fact sheet is for a program called kids@demoDAIRY, and I can send you a draft (with your pic in place) for you to consider if you want, (but I'll need an address to send it to) For context, and to check we're legit you can go to our website: westvcdairy.com.au. Can you answer by replying to this comment? Or I can leave an email address for you if you want.
    Thanks, Robyn.

    1. Robyn...it's fine with me if you use the picture. I was trying to find the original jpg to send to you, but I can't seem to locate it. Are you able to copy the pic right from the blog? If you'd like my email, it's adenlinger222(at)comcast.net I'd enjoy seeing the draft!
