She wanders around the calf hutches, searching for dropped grain...she wanders around the garden and the meadow, looking for bugs...and when she sees me coming, she crouches down and waits for me to pick her up and deposit her back inside the pen with her friends.
I was never sure how she escaped, but now I know. She's been caught in the act...and is starting to take a few of her friends along on her adventures.
**On a side note...since I switched pens, the chickens are actually laying a few more eggs. Still not setting any records, for sure, but I think they like the warm weather and the extra food they're finding in their new home
I let my chickens out late afternoon and shut them up after dark, I have a few that get out and I am not sure where. Yesterday my daughter in law and the grand kids walked over and brought their two dogs, a blood hound and blue heeler, the blood hound was tied up as she will wander off, the blue heeler killed one of the chickens while we were in having lunch, I guess that one won't be out again. :). I am enjoying your blog. Pam
ReplyDeleteLittle buggers. They don't know a good thing when they see it. I just read your post below and laughed. It looks as hard as herding turkeys. Glad you are getting some eggs.
ReplyDeleteI think that your chicken in the picture just wants to admire all the different repeat patterns in this picture. It's a great picture.
ReplyDeleteJB
Heehee... she's Dora the explorer :)
ReplyDeleteGlad that you were able to get her back in the pen, and keep her safe.
Have a great week, this week.
love,
K.
Every creature is an individual with plenty of personality quirks. If we care, we learn to love them because of/in spite of those quirks.
ReplyDeleteAt least you could catch her......none of ours would be that gentle.
ReplyDeleteWe are at the point of buying eggs again and I hate it! I couldn't let my graze today.....thin covering of ice on all the grass.
I was amazed they would stay in there. I guess they won't do too much harm this time of year. She looks awfully pretty up there.
ReplyDeleteSilly chicken, doesn't she know she could get in trouble out there?!?
ReplyDeleteCrazy chicken. guess she thinks the grass is greener on the other side!
ReplyDeleteDoes she not know she could get eaten? My SIL has a escapee like that. I saw her out this morning and I thought darn she will get eaten, we have foxes now and they are hungry. I love your photo graph. At least she is smart enough to wait for you to pick her up and put her back. I am so glad you are getting some eggs.
ReplyDeleteI think mine are on strike. I think right now for them it is too cold.
Funny that she lets you catch her every day. Silly chicken.
ReplyDeleteIs she flying out?
ReplyDeleteYes...I could never figure out how she was getting out...the cracks between the gate and posts were what I was suspecting, but then I caught her up on top of the post. Apparently she's been fluttering up and over! Every day, whether she's in the old pen or the new one. I guess she's got "wanderlust"! :)
DeleteI let mine free range during the day. They almost always end up flying over the barnyard fence into the little goat barn, and lay their eggs in there. My problem is that there is almost always one who doesn't want to go to bed in the coop at night and I have to spend a lot of time hunting for her to put her to bed.
ReplyDeleteI just love how chickens crouch down to let themselves be picked up...it is so awesome! We'll be getting more chicks in the spring...can't wait!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely chicken! I think she does it just because she can. Obviously she never goes far!
ReplyDeleteSo funny! I just love chickens, glad they like their new home. Catherine x
ReplyDeleteYou never told us how she got up there!!!
